Graduation with Distinction: German (GERMAN)
Procedure for selection of students
To be eligible, a German major must have a GPA of 3.3 in German at the time of application, which must be completed in time for pre-registration for fall semester of senior year. Qualified candidates must submit a completed application form to the director of undergraduate studies and enroll in German 299 (senior colloquium) in the fall. By mid-term of the senior colloquium, students who have developed a thesis project will be admitted to the distinction program.
Expected product
A project of at least 50 pages will be written during the spring semester under the guidance of the student's project advisor, and will be completed by April 15.
Evaluative body
A three-member faculty committee, consisting of the student's project advisor and two other German Studies faculty members.
Evaluation procedure
The student's committee oversees his/her progress and project. An oral defense of the senior project is required.
Levels of distinction
Three levels: Distinction, High Distinction, or Highest Distinction, based on an evaluation by the student's committee of the merit of the paper and its defense.
Special courses, other activities required, comments
Distinction candidates must take GERMAN 299, the senior colloquium, in the fall, and a research independent study course, GERMAN 192, in the spring of the senior year.
