Graduation with Distinction: Psychology (PSY)
Procedure for selection of students
Applicants must have an overall GPA of 3.3 and a GPA in Psychology of 3.5 at the time of application to the program, and they must maintain this level of performance through graduation. An application to the graduation with distinction program should be submitted no later than the second semester of the junior year with the expectation that at least two semesters will be devoted to the project.
Expected product
A substantial paper, usually based on empirical research and written in publication style, is required.
Evaluative body
A committee of three faculty members.
Evaluation procedure
Near the end of the final semester, candidates should submit three copies of the thesis to their mentor. The mentor will then convene the committee for an oral examination of the student and a decision as to whether the overall performance qualifies for graduation with distinction. An exceptional thesis combined with outstanding performance in psychology may qualify a student for the Zener Award.
Levels of distinction
One level: Distinction.
Special courses, other activities required, comments
Students’ theses are usually based on at least two semesters of independent studies with their mentors. Graduation with distinction research projects will be displayed at the spring Psychology Research Poster Fair.
