Sophomore Year Advising

The sophomore year is a time of increasing independence and self-determination for students.

After moving to West Campus, Trinity sophomores spend this year making important decisions about their program of study at Duke, studying abroad and participating in activities that will complement their career and life goals, such as mentored research, community service and student organizations.   The sophomore year can be exciting, but also overwhelming for some students, particularly if they experience a shift in their intellectual interests or setbacks in their planned course of study. While advising in the sophomore year emphasizes the importance of discovering what ignites each student's passion to delve deeply into one or more disciplines, attention is also given to helping students make adjustments to their short- and long-term plans so that they can realize the potential they showed entering Duke.   One tool used in this process is the Long Range Plan (LRP), a Web-based document that Trinity students complete in order to declare a major. Increasingly, the Long Range Plan is also being used by students and advisors long before official declaration takes place to track progress toward the degree and try out different majors, minors and certificate programs before making a final decision about a program of study.
