Working with Hazardous Materials?

Many departments in Arts & Sciences need to use material that is actually or potentially hazardous to health. These A&S departments have their own safe handling procedures, but problems can arise with the disposal of toxic material that is no longer needed. This includes paint, solvents, acid, flammables, chemicals, certain types of oil containing PCBs or similar, and liquids or compounds of an unknown nature.

A&S departments should never attempt to dispose of any hazardous material on their own.

The Office of Occupational & Environmental Safety (684-2794) has expertise in the safe handling and disposal of hazardous material. A&S Facilities works with O&ES for disposal issues and in maintaining clean toxic-free work environment.

You can also contact Clint King at for assistance or if you have further questions.
