Leave Supplements: Guidelines

Art & Sciences will consider faculty requests for supplementary salary in cases where an external grant does not cover the total salary for a semester.  Our ability to provide this support must balance the creation of research opportunities for faculty with campus teaching needs.  To qualify for consideration, a faculty member must win a fellowship of at least $20,000 or half pay, whichever is less.  In no case will the Duke furnished salary and any external funding exceed a faculty member’s nine-month salary.

Arts & Sciences will supplement a one-semester fellowship up to 50% of that semester’s pay.

Arts & Sciences will supplement a two-semester fellowship up to 40% of the nine-month salary.

For a year-long sabbatical at half pay, Arts & Sciences will supplement an external grant up to 50% of one semester’s pay.

Arts & Sciences will not contribute fringe benefits to grants paid through the Duke payroll system.

No exceptions will be made to this policy. In order to maximize their salary while on leave, faculty are encouraged to time their fellowship applications to coincide with their eligibility for accelerated or traditional sabbatical.
