Dean's Seminar

The Dean’s Seminar is one of four programs within the partnership between Duke University and Shiv Nadar University. The purpose of the series is to allow faculty and students from both universities to visit each other’s campuses, share research on specific issues and topics, and to pursue collaboration opportunities at all levels.

Dean's Seminar 2014: Urbanization

Faculty and students from Duke and Shiv Nadar met in Durham, North Carolina on October 11-12, 2014 to explore the theme of urbanization, from history to sociology to economics to environmental studies. The many presentations included different world areas ranging from the USA, China, India, as well as other parts of the globe.

The seminar concluded with an invitation from Duke to SNU colleagues to visit Durham in fall and continue the conversation on developing collaborative research and academic projects. When uneven nature of scholarship across different universities makes ‘equal exchange of intellectual goods almost an impossible goal in the current academic marketplace,’ this seminar is a beacon of the entrepreneurial spirit at both universities signaling long-term partnership to nurture reciprocity in knowledge and a great bold step towards building ‘an ivory fence for the first time over which neighbors might shake hands.’
