Arlie Petters

Associate Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education

Arlie Petters serves as the dean of academic affairs of Trinity College of Arts & Sciences and associate vice provost for undergraduate education. Dean Petters is responsible for the administrative and financial management of the college; the curricular and instructional programs, including the Academic Deans, the Thompson Writing Program, the Office of Continuing Studies, the Office of Undergraduate Research Support, and the Office of Assessment for Trinity College.

Petters holds Trinity College appointments as professor of mathematics and physics and an appointment at Duke’s Fuqua School of Business as a professor of business administration. He earned a B.A. and an M.A. in mathematics and physics from Hunter College in New York, and a Ph.D. in mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has received numerous awards for his research, including an Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship, a National Science Foundation Career Award, and the first Blackwell-Tapia Prize in the Mathematical Sciences. In 2006, the National Academy of Sciences inducted him into its Portrait Collection of Distinguished African American Scientists.

BlackshearDr. John H. Blackshear
Senior Associate Dean for Academic Planning

Dr. John H. Blackshear serves as senior associate dean for academic planning, Trinity College of Arts and Sciences, Duke University. In this role, he serves as a member of the Trinity College of Arts & Sciences' senior leadership team providing oversight to academic planning, programmatic development, and institutional proposal development.

Dr. Blackshear also serves an Academic Dean in the College of Arts & Sciences, an adjunct instructor of psychology & neuroscience and the Director for Duke SPIRE Fellows, a university STEM retention program. He serves as an academic advisor to undeclared students and for psychology majors, as well as Faculty-in-Residence in Trinity House on East Campus. Previously, he served as a psychologist at Duke’s Counseling and Psychological Services, Clinical Director at the Academic Resource Center and Duke University Student Ombudsman.

He holds Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in psychology from Florida A&M University. He completed his doctorate in clinical psychology from Georgia State University and is currently licensed to practice in the state of North Carolina.
