Lautbilder und Maschinenschrift cover.

This book examines how natural language was conceived as a digital phenomenon over the course of the 20th century. It traces this development from the inception of structural linguistics to the rise of information theory, and from Concrete Poetry to media art of the 1980s. It thereby renders visible a genealogy of language models that belongs to the critical foundations of present technologies.
