What is Embark?
Duke Embark is a year-long, residential first-year experience that begins at the Duke University Marine Lab in Beaufort, North Carolina, and continues on Duke’s Durham campus in the spring. Through an interdisciplinary set of small courses, students explore environmental change and human well-being in coastal and marine systems while connecting classroom learning with field experiences and the people and places of the North Carolina coast.
During the fall semester, Embark students live and learn together at the Marine Lab, building a close-knit community through shared courses, co-curricular activities, field experiences, and travel. In the spring, they transition to Durham with their cohort and join the broader Duke community. Duke Embark is open to students across the arts and sciences—not only those interested in marine or environmental fields.
