Dean of the Humanities

William A. Johnson, professor of Classical Studies, serves as the humanities dean.

Johnson's scholarship focuses broadly on the cultural history of Greece and Rome, with particular interest in ancient books, readers and reading, and how literary pursuits intersect with cultural context in antiquity. He teaches a wide range of Greek and Latin topics to undergraduate and graduate students and has chaired his home department since 2017. William also spent three years as Director of Graduate Studies for Classical Studies and was elected department head at his previous institution.

Johnson received his Ph.D. in Classical Philology from Yale University, his Masters in Greek Literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and his Bachelor's degree in English Literature & Latin Literature from Oberlin College.
