Academic Dean for OUSF Scholars, Trinity Languages Council, Global Education Committee.
Ph.D., History, University of Maryland, College Park
I grew up in Massachusetts, received a BA in Social Sciences from Hampshire College, and then earned my MA and Ph.D in Early American History at University of Maryland, College Park. The focus of my scholarship was the colonial and 19th-century plantation societies of Louisiana and the complicated (and often contentious) political, economic and social relationships between the African, Anglo, French, Spanish and Creole peoples of this region. Before I came to Duke, I taught History and Latin American Studies at the North Carolina School of Science and Math and spent a semester in Denmark on a Fulbright grant. My first position at Duke was as a Director of Academic Engagement (DAE) focusing on global and civic opportunities. I am particularly interested in expanding and deepening students’ experiences in the world, both academically and professionally. In this context, I support undergraduate research, programs and projects with a cross-cultural focus. I live in Durham with my husband, a couple of crabby cats, an anxious dog, and several chickens of varying character.
