Class of 2026
Major in Mathematics; Minor in Chemistry
I’m Ashley, and I’m a junior from San Diego, California! At Duke, I’m majoring in math and minoring in chemistry on the pre-med track in hope of one day becoming a physician. Within the math department, I’m excited to serve as vice president of the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) during the 2024-2025 school year, and I’m also an undergraduate researcher for the Bass Connections project “Assessing and Improving Girls’ and Women’s Math Identity,” where I help create and lead free math workshops for middle school girls in Durham. I’m also a member of the pre-medical fraternity Phi Delta Epsilon, and I volunteer at Duke Hospital in the surgical waiting room. Bridging my interests in math and medicine, I’ve spent the past semester interning at the Duke Institute for Health Innovation, which develops AI-based solutions to real-world clinical issues at Duke Hospital. In my free time, I love to run, spend time with friends and family, figure skate, and ski.
Favorite Class: I loved Probability (MATH 230S) with Dr. Akin. In this seminar-style class, we were split into small groups to work together and solve probability problems, and at the end of class we would present our solutions and answer questions. I loved how this course encouraged lively discussions about math, with our whole class being excited to think about problems in new ways.
