Majors in Cultural Anthropology and Medical Sociology; Minor in Chemistry

Hello! My name is Destiney, and I am a premedical student at Duke, deeply fascinated by how cultural lenses and factors shape our understanding and practices in medicine; I believe these lenses can reveal unforeseen factors that influence healthcare experiences. This intellectual curiosity has led me to explore the interplay between cultural perspectives and human health, and I enjoy analyzing the world and human experiences through lenses beyond science. Additionally, I find creativity through art, movement, and technology to be a profound aspect of being human, and I marvel at the beauty of the shared experiences that exist across cultures and times. Along with these interests, I aspire to be an OBGYN, possessing a deep passion for optimizing maternal and pediatric health. I am exploring this field through NIH research at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and Duke Medicine. I am also a recipient of the 2024 CRISSP Poster Award for my research, "Examining the Association Between Physician Trust and Perinatal Outcomes," and I desire to share and build upon this work.

Favorite Class: My favorite class was "Politics of Motherhood" taught by Dr. Jennifer Nash. This course offered a deep and robust exploration of the realities, expectations, and conceptual frameworks of motherhood that no course has ever interrogated before. In this course, I was pushed to challenge my own binary understandings of parenting, family, and motherhood, and broaden my understanding of what it means and looks like to "mother." I encountered interesting and exceptional literature that offered opinions I had never heard before and fostered profound conversation in and out of the classroom. This course also offered a medical anthropological lens of motherhood, grappling with how race, sexuality, and status may influence health and one's lived experiences.
