Professors Hedy Lee, M. Giovanna Merli and Marcos Rangel will lead the journal "Demography" for the next three years.

On May 1, Duke will become the new editorial home of Demography, the flagship journal of the Population Association of America, for the next three years.

Co-editors leading Demography are Hedy Lee, James B. Duke Distinguished Professor of Sociology; M. Giovanna Merli,Professor of Public Policy, Sociology and Global Health; and Marcos Rangel, Associate Professor of Public Policy and Economics. A multidisciplinary team of Duke faculty, along with faculty from other top-tier research institutions, will serve as Deputy Editors.

The team’s goals are to (1) preserve “Demography”’s core areas, (2) highlight research on social, economic and health demography, and (3) address timely topics where demography offers critical insights. They will promote work that integrates demographic methods with other disciplines to tackle key societal issues such as aging, inequality, migration and the role of public policy in population health.

Being chosen as the journal’s new editorial home recognizes Duke faculty's strong collaborations with demographers and population scientists both nationwide and globally. It also demonstrates Duke’s leadership in interdisciplinary population and health research.

“We are excited to continue the important work of this journal and help extend its already strong impact across multiple fields,” said the team.
