Emergencies, Personal

Policy

The university recognizes that students are sometimes confronted with emergency situations that are unexpected and stressful. There are a number of academic and personal support staff available on campus to help a student identify options and make appropriate decisions.

Procedure

If you are unable to attend or complete work for classes, contact your Academic Dean by phone or email. Your dean can notify your instructors, excuse absences, allow postponement of work, and assist you in considering options. If you are unable to contact your dean yourself, you may ask a roommate, friend, RA, family member or other individual to contact your dean for you.

  • If you are uncertain what to do or where to begin and would like to speak with someone during regular business hours (Monday-Friday, 8 to 5), or if your concerns are non-academic, contact the DukeReach office at 919-681-2455.
  • In case of an emergency in which your or another's immediate safety is at risk, please call Duke Police at 919-684-2444. If calling off campus, dial 9-1-1.
  • For urgent mental health and safety concerns, access Duke's Confidential Mental Health Crisis Line by calling 919-660-1000, option 2.
  • For a comprehensive list of resources for support and assistance, see the DukeReach website.
